Holo Humpday: Colors by Llarowe Little Red Corvette

Alright, back to my quest for the perfect primary cherry red holographic nail polish! I feel a bit like Goldilocks here – the first one I tried (Loaded Lacquer’s Double Shot of Sriracha) was too orange-toned, and the second one (Chaos & Crocodiles Security Breach) was too pink/purple-toned. Both were stunning, but they weren’t exactly what I was looking for. Here’s hoping I find one that’s juuuust right! So up for today’s Holo Humpday, I have Colors by Llarowe Little Red Corvette.

CbL Little Red Corvette

CbL Little Red Corvette – 2 coats

This is such a strong holo! It’s almost opaque in one coat, but I wore it with 2 to make the holo really slap you in your face! I really really love it (the polish, not slapping you in the face 😉 ). Buuut it’s still a bit more pink/purple-toned than what I was searching for.

Slightly different lighting - check out that holo flame!

So yummy! But it is more maraschino cherry than primary red cherry.

Here’s a closeup:

Oh well, so my quest continues. One day I’ll find what I’m looking for!

What do you think of this one? Pretty isn’t it? 🙂

My first Waterfall Mani: October’s NCC #2

My inspiration for this month’s Nail Challenge Collaborative theme of stripes is sorely lacking. I really wanted to get creative, but I’m finding it difficult! For my second look, I decided to venture into a design I haven’t done before – a waterfall manicure.

I saw the waterfall mani way back when on The Nailasaurus’ site, and I’ve always liked it but never tried. I gotta say – it’s a lot harder than it looks! Picking all the colors that are different enough yet still complementary, then making those perfect stripes that taper at the end… it’s definitely a challenge!

My attempt at the Waterfall Manicure

My attempt at the Waterfall Manicure

I’m not 100% thrilled with how it turned out. I trimmed my striping brush, but I think the stripes are still a bit wider than I’d like. But I personally like the colors I chose. I love a good peach-purple combo.

My less-than-perfect waterfall

My less-than-perfect waterfall

I think that if I were to redo this, I’d probably do another shade of purple instead of the red-orange color. Of course that’s in addition to drawing the stripes thinner and neater! But this is a first attempt, so I’m not going to beat myself up too much!

Colors used:

  • Base color: Barry M Papaya… this totally freaked my camera out! It’s a really pretty bright peach and is very similar to Essie’s Tart Deco
  • Stripes:
    • OPI Black Cherry Chutney… a goooorgeous deep eggplant purple/ almost black shimmer
    • Orly Cotton Candy… a beautiful light pink-purple
    • OPI Cajun Shrimp… a bright vivid red-orange creme
    • Colors by Llarowe Nice Melons… a coral peach holo

Have you done a waterfall manicure before? Any tips for this newbie?

My first Indigo Bananas!

Yay for Friday! I am just exhausted after these past two weeks – work has been crazy. But things are better because it’s Friday! And guess what else makes things better? An amazing new polish to show you, of course! I’ve seen Indigo Bananas around here and there, and I’ve been wanting to try their polish out. They always seem like they have some of the most unique polishes!

I saw swatches of the Indigo Bananas Summer Rains collection on The Mercurial Magpie’s blog, and I had to bite the bullet and purchase a few! Kirby’s swatches were amazing (as usual), and she is totally one of my biggest polish enablers! The polish from the Summer Rains collection I was most excited about is Acid Ocean.

Indigo Bananas Acid Ocean – 3 coats

Crazy beautiful right?! Acid Ocean is a deep teal jelly with green-gold shimmer and aqua-green small flakies. It’s so freaking pretty!

Such a complex polish!

Such a complex polish!

In most lighting it looks just like the pictures above, but then it can look almost emerald-teal in darker light or a brighter teal in more bright light.

Brighter, more direct light

Brighter, more direct light

That wasn’t a great picture, but I wanted to show off the brighter teal shift in more direct lighting. Also, as a sidenote – in person, you can’t see the visible nail edge.

I am just loving this polish! What do you think? Do you have any polishes from Indigo Bananas? If not, I highly recommend this one! 😉

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Holo Humpday: Rica Black Baroness

Happy Wednesday everyone! Here’s hoping your week is going well so far! I’ve been working like crazy the past two weeks, so I’m just barely squeezing these posts in on my usual schedule. My busy work schedule also means my nails just broke 😦 I had them at my favorite length too! So sad. I am now nubbinized.

I had mentioned in my last post that I don’t really wear seasonally appropriate colors all the time. I do, however, tend to wear certain colors based on my nail length. I absolutely love a dark vampy color on nubbins. And I love to show off a more complex polish or nail art when my nails are longer. So you’re going to see some darker colors while my nails are growing out!

For today’s Holo Humpday, I have an amazing black holographic polish. Rica’s Black Baroness is goooorgeous!

Black Baroness

My pics don’t even do this polish justice… it’s just amazingly beautiful! It’s a perfect black with a strong holo finish. I looove it! Rica just has never done me wrong – it’s such a great brand!

Mmm mmm mmm! I just can’t get enough of this one. Rica did just put out Black Baroness 2.0 in her Royal Ladies collection, which seems like it’s this polish plus blue microflakies. The description also says there’s even more holo than before… this one already has a very strong holo finish, so I can only imagine how that looks!

So much love for Black Baroness

I did get a bottle that had a bit of a wonky brush, but it didn’t affect the application at all. I am in love with this black holo!

Do you have a favorite black holo polish? I don’t know if it gets any better than this one 🙂

Fanbrush Manicure: October NCC #1

I have finally gotten into the Fall spirit! I’m a big supporter of wearing whatever shade/ color nail polish you want whenever you want. And I still will totally rock a neon or bright color even in the dark of winter. BUT I have really been gravitating towards the more muted, darker colors of fall now. Maybe it’s because many of the new Fall collections are continuing to arrive on my doorstep!

Anyways, today I have a very Fall-appropriate manicure for you. October’s Nail Challenge Collaborative theme is Stripes! I wanted to use this month to try techniques I haven’t done before or practice others I’m not so great at. So first up is my “messy striped manicure” using a previously untried technique – fanbrush!

Fall fanbrush manicure

I’m now kind of sad that I haven’t done this before! It was soooo easy! And it’s one of those types of nail art that is ok if it’s messy (my favorite type 😉 ). It kind of reminds me of camouflage.

I used:

  • Base Color – Revlon Spanish Moss… a gorgeous opaque olive green. I bought this last year and have really loved this color so much!
  • Top Color – KBShimmer Stonewashed… From the new Fall 2014 collection, this is a stunning greyed-out navy blue. I’m loving all the muted dusty shades this fall.

What do you think? Does this remind you of camouflage as well? Do you like fanbrush manis?

Squish the Rainbow Leadlighting

It’s been a really long time since I’ve tried a leadlighting manicure and I recently picked up the entire Rica jelly polish collection (Squish the Rainbow), so I figured it was high time to venture back into leadlighting! If you haven’t heard of this style, it’s basically like a color-by-numbers technique using jelly polishes over a stamp.

I really just wanted to play around practicing leadlighting with different stamps. The intention was not to create a wearable manicure, but I think it actually looks pretty good!

Rica leadlighting manicure

Not bad right? It’s flowery but geometric, and the colors kind of bring it all together.

What I used for this mani:

  • Base color: OPI Alpine Snow
  • Stamps: MoYou London Explorer 03… such a perfect plate for this technique! All the images are detailed and have lots of areas to color in.
  • Stamping polish: Rica Blackout
  • Leadlighting colors: Rica Squishy Blueberry, Squishy Lime, Squishy Lemon, and Squishy Grape… These are all great jelly polishes! They worked so perfectly for leadlighting, and they look so pretty over white. LOVE!
  • I applied the leadlighting colors with a tiny dotting tool to help fill in smaller areas.

This kind of manicure makes me feel like I’m a kid with a coloring book! It’s so fun and relaxing, but it does take quite awhile if the stamping images are detailed. The end game makes it totally worth it though – the manicures come out so great!

What do you think? Have you done leadlighting before? What other images do you like to use?

Holo Humpday: ILNP Atomic Sherbet

Happy October everyone! I feel like I say this every month, but the year is going by so quickly! For my first holo humpday in October, I have an appropriate color for you – a light pumpkin orange! I Love Nail Polish’s Atomic Sherbet didn’t initially strike me as fully Fall-esque until I had it on my nails… then I saw the true pumpkin (perhaps the Great Pumpkin even?) brightness!

Without further ado, Atomic Sherbet!

ILNP Atomic Sherbet

This was the polish I had been wanting the most from ILNP’s Fall 2014 collection, and it doesn’t disappoint! It’s a orange/ tangerine/ copper holographic beauty.

Strong holo as usual, ILNP – strong work 🙂

There’s almost a metallic quality to it in the shade, but the sunlight just makes everything glow! Check it out:

So incredibly beautiful!

And how can I let this post go without a close-up?

Excuse the ragged cuticles… focus on that stunning polish!

Phew! I love this polish so much!

Since I can’t leave a good manicure alone, I decided what this ridiculously sparkly polish needed was MORE sparkle!

Holo + more sparkle

I added this gorgeous glitter topper I made from the Nayll website (see this post featuring all the fun polishes I designed!) What do you think? Do you like orange polish? Is the glitter a bit too much?
