Needle drag manicure: April NCC #3

Hello sweeties! Time for another manicure recreation! Today, I’ve chosen a gorgeous mani done by Lisa of The Polish Playground. She did this color blend mani (see her blog post here), which was before I joined the group. But I went back through old pics and found her version of a needle drag manicure!

Not this kind of drag:

Ahhh I love Rocky Horror! I’ve been to many a midnight showing. Magenta used to be my go-to Halloween costume, and people who weren’t familiar with the movie/ play would think I was just some messed up french maid lol.

I’ve chosen to do a slightly brighter version:

I wanted bright, and where have I been going for bright colors recently? To the China Glaze Electric Nights collection of course! (wow I’m being super corny today!) I chose the bright red-orange neon as my base – it’s photographing more orange than it is in person. But it’s SO freaking neon! I love this one!

Just wow, right?! So bright!

Needle drag manicure

Polishes used/ how I did this:

  • Base color: China Glaze Red-y To Rave… This is another one of the Electric Nights polishes. The formula is perfect (only needed 2 coats for opacity) and this neon red-orange coral is such a great color!
  • I then painted thick vertical stripes of the following colors:
    • China Glaze Red-y To Rave
    • Polish My Life 1950s Mint Fridge… I’ve mentioned this gorgeous aqua teal before. It’s perfection 🙂
    • Color Club Baldwin Blues… This is a gorgeous deep teal that I have in a mini bottle (I think I got it in some Birchbox a long time ago).
  • Then I took the most narrow dotting tool and dragged it horizontally to blend them all.

What do you think? Have you done this needle drag technique before? What color combos do you like to drag together?

Nail Inspiration from an Odd Place

My dog’s collar! That’s right, this manicure you’re about to behold got its inspiration from a dog collar. I picked it up recently from Target and loved the design. I then went out for some drinks with friends, got home, and decided to do what any sane nail polish addict/ dog lover would do – paint my nails to match my dog!

Here’s my dog, Kaiser (whose attention is currently directed at the mailman hopefully dropping off some nail goodies for me!), and his beautiful new collar:

And here’s my semi-tipsy recreation dotticure based on the design:

Colorful dotticure

Colors Used:

  • Base: Rica Whiteout
  • Yellow: Sally Hansen Lightening
  • Dark Teal: Color Club Baldwin Blues
  • Light Blue: Essie Mint Candy Apple

And here’s a close-up of the nail that came out the best:

Macro dotticure

I like how it came out! Maybe it doesn’t match Kaiser’s collar exactly, and the diamonds ended up more circular… but hey, I was a bit tipsy and I still like the end product 🙂 They kind of look like mosaic tiles. What do you think?

Just a small-town girl: April NCC #2

I just HAD to pay tribute to one of my favorite 80s bands for the Nail Challenge Collaborative’s Music/ Movies/ TV theme. It’s time for my JOURNEY-inspired manicure!

I took my inspiration from the cover of the album, The Essential Journey:

Here’s a clearer shot of the cover I copied off of Spotify:

As you can see, the album cover background almost looks like a combination of a saran wrap manicure with some sponged on details. So that’s exactly what I did for my thumb, index finger, and pinky.

Colors used for those fingers:

  • Base color – China Glaze Secret Peri-Winkle, a nice cornflower blue
  • Used saran wrap to layer on Color Club Baldwin Blues – a dark teal blue
  • Then I sponged on a small amount of Formula X by Sephora Heart-Stopping, a very light lavender with a blueish tint
  • More sponging using Essie Play Date – a brighter purple
  • Lastly, I sponged on a tiny bit of Julep Aisha – a darker cranberry reddish purple

Then I tried to emulate the beetle with wings from the middle of the cover by doing a water marble using bright colors. Here’s a close up of my middle finger:

I used:

  • Formula X by Sephora Pyrotechnic – a bright fire red
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed – a bright orange
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow – you guessed it, a bright yellow
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away! – yup, a bright blue

And another shot of the final look:

So I don’t enjoy it as a complete manicure, but I think it served its purpose paying tribute to Journey. What do you think?
