Cloud manicure: April NCC #4

Hello sweeties! It’s almost the April, and I have one last look from the Nail Challenge Collaborative’s 3rd anniversary theme of recreating one another’s manis. I had so many I wanted to try out, so it was really difficult narrowing it down to 4 looks! This last manicure is a recreation of a cloud mani done by Katee from A Girl and Her Polish (see her blog post here).

I’ve never done a cloud manicure, but I’ve seen them around for awhile and always wanted to try!

It wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be! And I really like the color combination that Katee did, so I wanted to stay as close to that as possible.

Polishes used/ how I did this:

  • Base color: Polish My Life Stripped… One of my top 3 favorite white polishes. It’s even and opaque coverage in 2 coats!
  • I then let polish ball up on the end of the brush and dabbed it on the nail, creating the rounded edge and then swiping it to the tip of my nail. I did this with the following polishes:
    • Polish My Life Coral Fedora… This is a gorgeous light coral creme with a perfect formula!
    • I Love Nail Polish Admire Me… ILNP’s holos are amazing, and this one is no different! Unfortunately this one is no longer available, but ILNP has a few other teal holos that are gorgeous too 🙂

What do you think? Have you done cloud manis before?

Holo Blobbicure

Hello sweeties! It’s FRIDAY! And it’s a holiday for some of you – even better! Those of you who have a long weekend, enjoy it! Enjoy your family and friends and perhaps some chocolate?

Chocolate counts as a salad

Yup, my thoughts exactly!

And as always, I digress… NAILS! We all love nail polish! So let’s chat more about that, eh? I’ve been mildly obsessed with the All Things Vintage collection from Polish My Life, so I’ve been using them in a bunch of different manis recently.

Holo and pastel blobbicure

Holo and pastel blobbicure

And this is what I came up with today! It’s holo meets skittlette meets pastel meets blobbicure! I love these colors so much, and I really enjoyed blobbing them all together 🙂

More blobs!

More blobs!

I did have to redo the blobby nails a few times. I think the white base coat dried too quickly, so I’d dab on blobs of polish and they’d just sit there looking like a stupid dotted mess. So I had to work pretty quickly in order to get this look.

And here’s a closeup:

Polishes used/ how I did this:

  • Index & Middle finger:
    • Base polish: Polish My Life Stripped… This is one of my favorite white polishes! It’s creamy and perfectly opaque in 2 coats. For best white polishes, it’s a close 3rd after Rica Whiteout & KBShimmer Eyes White Open!
    • Blobbed colors:
      • Polish My Life 1950s Mint Fridge… This beautiful mint green is perfection! Great formula, gorgeous color, and just divine! 🙂
      • Polish My Life Springtime Blues… As with all PML pastel cremes, this is also perfection. It’s a beautiful mid-tone blue – not too dark, not too light, but still so vivid and colorful!
      • Color Club Harp on It… The perfect silver holo! The halo hues are just plain amazing, and this one is no different!
  • Ring finger: I Love Nail Polish Music Box… a gorgeous minty aqua holo. So pretty! It doesn’t match perfectly to PML 1950s Mint Fridge, but it’s pretty close so I’ll give it a pass! 🙂
  • Pinky (& thumb): Color Club Harp on It

What do you think? Do you like multicolored blobbicures? Do you have a long weekend ahead? If so, any fun plans?

And now for your daily David Tennet!

Terrified… absolutely terrified 😉

Gone Girl Manicure: November’s NCC #4

Gone Girl: one of the most f***ed up books I’ve read in a loooong time. And it was recently made into a movie that I (finally!) saw yesterday, so of course my last NCC book-themed manicure had to be inspired by it.

Have you read Gone Girl yet? It’s this crazy story of two screwed up people who are married to one another and spend a lot of time screwing one another over. It’s reaaaalllly good! And I was pretty impressed with how the movie turned out too. I definitely recommend it!

And here’s my mani:

Gone Girl Manicure

Gone Girl Manicure

My index and middle finger were supposed to be the wisps of blonde hair that are on the book cover. They ended up looking more like light tree branches. I think I probably should have used a much thinner nail art brush, but hindsight is 20/20 right? My ring finger and pinky are much more successfully obvious – they are blood splatter! This is inspired by, well, blood. In the beginning of the book, Amy (the wife) is missing and there is blood splatter in their kitchen.

Colors used:

  • Index and Middle Finger
    • Base color: Julep Cleopatra… a satin-finish black that does show a little streakiness but is otherwise a nice polish
    • Hair/ tree branches: Julep Alexandra… an ugly eggshell cream neutral polish that looks awful with my skintone, but is great for nail art
  • Ring Finger and Pinky
    • Base color: Polish My Life Stripped… as I’ve mentioned before, a great 2 coat white
    • Blood: Sephora Formula X Pyrotechnic… an amazing red creme

So yeah, I’m not thrilled with this mani but it’s alright. The book and movie are much better than  my nails show! What do you think? Would you like tree branches for hair? Do you desire those *extremely* thick tresses? And have you seen/ read Gone Girl? Did you like the story as much as I did?

Mad Hatter Manicure: August NCC #4

My last NCC manicure for the Tea Party theme is here! I’ve been excited to show you guys this one. I was stumped for this 4th look after doing my lace, flowers, and Lilly designs. But then inspiration hit! I thought about tea parties and a little movie worked its way from deep in my memory… Alice in Wonderland and her crazy tea party with the Mad Hatter!

So here is my Mad Hatter-inspired manicure:

Very busy, but so was my inspiration! Thinking of the Mad Hatter, colorful bold patterns come to mind, so I picked some fun colors and stamps and went to town!

I actually really love this manicure. I wouldn’t wear it to work or anything, but I think coordinating patterns and bold colors looks great!

I taped off half my nail, then painted or stamped the exposed portion, top coated it with a quick dry polish, then taped off the already completed half while stamping the other. Whew, that was wordy!

I also was able to use my Mundo de Unas stamping polishes for the first time! Sylvia makes some really opaque stamping polishes, but unfortunately she’s no longer shipping internationally (she’s in Mexico).

Stuff I used:

  • All nails started with a base of Polish My Life Stripped (amazing white creme)
  • Index finger: Zoya Charisma on the top half (bright purple) stamped with MDU Mexican Pink using Cheeky plate, CH10 (designed after the Cheshire Cat!)
    • Bottom half stamped with Konad Black using Gals plate, GA13
  • Middle finger: bottom half painted with China Glaze In The Lime Light (a goooorgeous neon lime green with a bit of shimmer)
    • Top half stamped with Zoya Charisma using Gals plate, GA15
  • Ring finger: bottom half stamped with KBShimmer Low and Be Bold (an amaaazing jellyish vivid cobalt blue) using Cheeky plate, CH6
    • Top half stamped with Konad Black using Gals plate, GA1
  • Pinky: Top half painted with KBShimmer Low and Be Bold
    • Bottom half stamped with MDU Neon Green using Cheeky plate, CH16

So that’s it for the August Nail Challenge Collaborative! How did you like the tea party theme? I really liked it. Which was your favorite look? I loved my neon stripes & flower and this mad hatter mani.

PS: Whovians out there – did you see the premiere? Do you like Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor? I am devastated because I can’t see the premiere tonight (I have a great concert to go to) AND I don’t have BBC America. I plan on fixing that ASAP, so hopefully I’ll be able to watch the premiere just a bit late. No spoilers, please 😉

June NCC #3: First attempt at tribal nails

I love the look of tribal art on nails, but it’s always eluded me how people get those intricate designs so neat. I’ve tried with a small brush, and it looked so messy. I finally got one of those Sally Hansen I heart Nail Art pens from Target and started doodling. The polish (or whatever it is within the pens) comes out quickly and was pretty runny for me, but the designs were mostly easy to draw onto my nail!

Unfortunately, I didn’t let the designs dry for enough time – I slapped on some Seche Vite thinking it’d be similar to other nail art where it wouldn’t smudge. Well, it didn’t necessarily smudge… but it did make the black lines in my design almost bubble up. So it doesn’t look great, but maybe I’ll just let it dry longer next time.

Anyways, take a look:

Image

See? I like the pattern, but I’m disappointed in the detail of the black lines. Here’s another pic:

I used Polish My Life Stripped as my white base polish. I also wanted to see what it’d look like with some leadlighting over the manicure. So I used some jelly polish I just purchased – Sally Hansen now has a line of sheer jellies in their Triple Shine line. I used Sea Through, a gorgeous teal green, and Vitamin D-Light, a lovely orangey pink.

I’m looking forward to using the Sally Hansen jellies more! Look for more leadlighting coming 🙂

And here are some other Nail Challenge Collaborative Black and White manis:

Black and White Mani: June NCC #1

June’s theme for the Nail Challenge Collaborative is Black & White. I was kind of lacking in ideas, but then I got my first order of Nail Vinyls which included the perfect chevrons. And I knew I had to use them!

1-IMG_2760

I think that was a surprisingly good photo for being taken by my iPhone in the harsh lighting of the hospital with my scrubs for a background!

For the white polish, I used Polish My Life’s Stripped. It’s one of the best white polishes I’ve ever tried! It isn’t quite the holy grail white polish where there’s zero streaking, etc. There is a thin streaky first coat, but then it covers great and smoothly with the second. I’d put it on par with OPI’s Alpine Snow.

The black is Color Club’s Beyond, which is an amazing black grey holo. And the Nail Vinyls are from @teismom or nailvinyls.storenvy.com.
