Doctor Who Manicure: November NCC #3

So technically this manicure for November’s NCC (inspired by a book) is a bit of a cheat. Doctor Who is a television show, not a book. I do, however, have a book on Doctor Who (Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who)! So I’m calling it a draw. 🙂

I’ve been meaning to do a Doctor Who themed manicure for awhile now, and I’m so happy I finally did! I’ve become a bit obsessed with the show – if you’ve seen it, you understand. I was introduced to this amazing show just about a year and a half ago, and I adore it! It’s nerdy, hilarious, and loaded with so many feels. In one episode, you can go from giggling to terrified to sobbing in the corner in the fetal position. I’ve only seen “New Who,” aka the seasons from 2005 to present and Netflix only has sporadic pieces of Original Who, so when I saw this book guide to the 50 years of the show I had to have it!

The Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who

The book does exist! The Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who – Just look at all those villains!

And here is my Doctor Who manicure:

I love this mani so much! From the Tardis decal to the Dalek to that gorgeous blue polish… it all just makes me happy! If you’re not familiar with the show, let me briefly explain what each finger means.

  • My index finger has a Tardis decal – the Tardis is the spaceship that can transport the Doctor and his companion(s) through space and time (it stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space).
  • My middle finger is the color of the Tardis and the polish is named after one of the Doctor’s companions, Amy Pond (one of my top 3 favorites).
  • My ring finger is a Dalek (an enemy of the Doctor’s).
  • And my pinky is based on another villain from the show, The Silence.
  • Oh! And the grey base polish is named after another villain, the Vashta Nerada.

What I used:

  • Index: Grey base = Digital Nails Count Your Shadows… These pics don’t do the polish justice. There’s a slight pink/ purple shimmer that isn’t showing up well. You can kind of see it on my pinky. Digital Nails has an amazing variety of Doctor Who-themed polishes. That makes me so happy – I need so many of them!!
  • Index: Decal is from YouPolish – the sheet also has Daleks, three different Doctors’ faces (9, 10, and 11), and DW
  • Middle finger: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer A Long Time Ago Tomorrow… this is an amazingly beautiful shimmery Tardis-blue from the Women of Doctor Who collection. It dries a bit satin, but a top coat makes it soooo pretty! Love love love!!
  • Ring finger: Base color Sally Hansen Black Platinum… a semi-sheer black with a tinge of silver shimmer. Stripes are Revlon’s Sequin, a silver chrome. Nail studs were a gift off Amazon, I believe.
  • Pinky: Base is Digital Nails Count Your Shadows with Zoya Raven details.

So what do you think? Does this sort of count as a book-themed mani? Are you a fellow Whovian? If so, who’s your favorite companion and favorite Doctor?

Fanbrush Manicure: October NCC #1

I have finally gotten into the Fall spirit! I’m a big supporter of wearing whatever shade/ color nail polish you want whenever you want. And I still will totally rock a neon or bright color even in the dark of winter. BUT I have really been gravitating towards the more muted, darker colors of fall now. Maybe it’s because many of the new Fall collections are continuing to arrive on my doorstep!

Anyways, today I have a very Fall-appropriate manicure for you. October’s Nail Challenge Collaborative theme is Stripes! I wanted to use this month to try techniques I haven’t done before or practice others I’m not so great at. So first up is my “messy striped manicure” using a previously untried technique – fanbrush!

I’m now kind of sad that I haven’t done this before! It was soooo easy! And it’s one of those types of nail art that is ok if it’s messy (my favorite type 😉 ). It kind of reminds me of camouflage.

I used:

  • Base Color – Revlon Spanish Moss… a gorgeous opaque olive green. I bought this last year and have really loved this color so much!
  • Top Color – KBShimmer Stonewashed… From the new Fall 2014 collection, this is a stunning greyed-out navy blue. I’m loving all the muted dusty shades this fall.

What do you think? Does this remind you of camouflage as well? Do you like fanbrush manis?

Neon stripes and roses: August NCC #3

Here comes manicure #3 for August’s NCC theme of Tea Party! For this one, I decided to basically recreate a recent favorite of mine – stripes and flowers. I imagine an outside tea party in a garden with a trellis of vines and flowers. Since I’m obsessed with neon, I also used my recent Models Own purchase.

Gorgeous right?? I love this type of manicure. Paulina’s Passions does it perfectly, and I just plain strive to make my flower nails like hers!

This manicure was actually from awhile ago… I had it on my nails when the August theme was announced, and I knew it’d be perfect for the tea party theme!

Polishes used:

  • Pinky, thumb, and neon stripes: Models Own Flip Flop
  • Base color: Rica Whiteout
  • Roses: Orly Frolic (bright orchid purple), OPI Vant to Bite my Neck? (dark purple accent), Illamasqua Collide (sheer neon pink to brighten the roses up)
  • Leaves: Revlon Posh

What do you think? Do you wear neons year-round or just in the warmer months? I think I want to wear neons forever 🙂

Spring Flower Mani

I wanted to share an older manicure I did about a month ago. Please forgive the poor photography – I’m still improving!

I was inspired by the beautiful flowers that Paulina’s Passions is famous for. She did a gorgeous mani called her Nautical Rose Mani, where she had horizontal navy blue and white stripes and pink roses as accents. I had to try it!

The CLAW! (Does anyone else think about Toy Story whenever they do the claw pose? I know I do 🙂 )

I decided to do vertical stripes instead because my nails were a bit shorter and I didn’t want them to look wide and stubby. I think the vertical stripes elongate them a bit.

Here’s how I did it:

  • Base color of L’Oreal Jet Set to Paris, a much older polish of mine that is a really pretty darker blue creme
  • Stripes with Zoya Purity
  • Then I blobbed on slightly irregular dots of Essie Boom Boom Room (the light Barbie pink)
  • Then I used a small striper to draw little swirly lines of a darker pink, L’Oreal Check Me Out (a more fuschia pink)
  • Then I drew on small leaves with a small dotting tool using Revlon Posh (a crayola true green)

I really loved this manicure! Wish my pics were better, but hey I’m working on that! What do you think of my first attempt at roses over stripes?
