Purple floral manicure: May NCC #1

Hello sweeties!

Moriarty did you miss me, sherlock

I decided to take a quick break from blogging, so there was no post on Friday. I needed some rest after working on those monster presentations! They went well, and now I’m back with some manis for all y’all!

May brings another Nail Challenge Collaborative theme, and this month we’re doing FLOWERS! I love floral manis so much, and it’s such a perfect theme for spring! For my first look, I’m doing a mani inspired by Marisa of Hey Darling Polish (see her post here). Marisa always does the best floral manis, and this one is one of my favorites of hers!

As you can see, I used a different base color. I recently picked up this almost white pistachio color, and I’ve been dying to use it. So I did! I kept the flowers as close to my inspiration as possible though!

So the white flowers barely show up against the really light pistachio background, but I still like the overall look! I wish I would have used something other than white, or maybe a darker green/ teal background.

Polishes used:

  • Base color: Floss Gloss Glowstar… This gorgeous polish is a very light pastel pistachio green, verging on a green-tinged white. It’s a bit of a tricky formula – streaky on the 1st coat and requiring 3 smooth coats. But the beauty is worth it! And it makes me look more tan than I am, and I’m always a fan of that!
  • Flowers:
    • Light purple: Essie Play Date… This is a great light purple polish. And it has one of the better formulas for Essie! It’s one of my favorite Essies ever!
    • Dark purple: OPI Vant to Bite My Neck?… A gorgeous dark purple creme with a perfect formula.
    • White: Zoya Purity… A nice white creme – not my favorite, but still a nice one.
    • Yellow: Sally Hansen Lightening… This is a great opaque pure yellow. It has a great formula, and it is my favorite yellow to use for stamping!

What do you think?

Striped Splatter Manicure: October’s NCC #3

For my 3rd striped look of October, I decided to do another previously untried technique – splatter! It’s always seemed like more work than fun and when I tried a long time ago, I couldn’t get the polish to even splatter from the straw. {Insert juvenile joke about blowing harder here 😉 } Since I’m now an older and wiser nail blogger, I figured it was time to try it again!

Splatter and stripes and texture - oh my!

Splatter and stripes and texture – oh my!

I debated on exactly how to accomplish this end product – throw some decals down and splatter over it or splatter, then stamp stripes. I ended up doing the latter because I thought it would take too much time splattering over the decals, which would make the thinned out polish dry and peel up. But anyways, I’d like to attempt that way as well!

I think this method worked out pretty well nonetheless, and I really like how it came out! I used a very similar color scheme as my last manicure (the dry marble swirl mani) because I think it looks almost like an abstract spring floral design.

I also got to break out my very first Pixie Dust from Zoya! I had been resisting that purchase because I have never really gotten into textures. But Zoya had such a great sale recently where you could get 3 free polishes and the Remove+, so I thought I’d finally try it out. I have to say – I love them! They’re not too textured that it’ll catch on everything, but they still show off a really cool visual difference between the other glossy nails. I still don’t think I’d wear them as a full mani, but I do like them as an accent!

I do love this look!

I do love this look!

What I used:

  • Splatter nails:
    • Base color: Zoya Purity… this is definitely not my favorite white polish, but I wanted to still give it some love. It’s ok, it’s just not the best.
    • Zoya Hunter… a great dark hunter green
    • China Glaze Rose Among Thorns… a very pretty red/pink-leaning fuchsia
    • Polish My Life Greenwich Street… a very nice pastel kelly green
    • Stamping plate: Bundle Monster BM-411
    • Stamping polish: Rica Whiteout – now THIS is my favorite white polish 🙂
  • Accent nail: Zoya Chita… a gorgeous hunter green textured polish

So what do you think? Do you like the combination of splatter and stripes? Are you a textured polish fan?

Dry marble swirl manicure

I saw a post on Instagram recently that featured this amazing dry marble manicure by Sveta Sanders. I had seen quite a few dry marbled manis before, but I really loved her use of 3 different colors. So I decided I wanted to try it out!

My dry marble manicure

I think mine came out alright – definitely not the same as my inspiration, but still pretty cool! My index finger is a bit messy because I slopped on too much white polish, but I really like how my middle finger turned out. I think with more practice, this could be a go-to technique! It was quick and easy, and I really liked the outcome.

Now the colors I chose ended up a bit Christmassy, but I didn’t intend that. I wanted to use another of my Ellagee glitters from the Villianous Holo-ween collection (see Poor Unfortunate Souls here), and I took my color scheme inspiration from the glitter.

Playing around with new hand positions - look at that glitter!!

Colors used:

  • Base color: Polish My Life Greenwich Street… this is an interesting green. It’s one of those ugly pretty colors, kind of like a slightly pastel pistachio green. It reminds me of OPI’s Gargantuan Green Grape, but this is a bit more kelly green whereas GGG leans a bit mint. The formula is amaaazing, which is what I’ve found with all Polish My Life cremes!
  • Swirl: Zoya Purity (white) and China Glaze Rose Among Thorns… RAT is such a pretty bright pinkish fuchsia.
  • Glitter: Ellagee Friends on the Other Side… a goooorgeous glitter topper that has fuchsia hexes and green hexes and microglitter. I just need one coat for great glitter payoff – it’s PACKED!

Anyways, what do you think of this manicure? Have you tried dry marbling? If so, do you swirl or do a different technique? Also, what do you think of the hand position for my second pic? I’ve been playing around with different positions (HAND positions you dirty-minded people!).

Neon Ikat Manicure

If you haven’t realized from my last few posts, I’m really into neon nails right now! I love a good, bright manicure that glows in the sun. A bunch of my admired nail bloggers from the Oh Mon Dieu challenge recently did ikat manicures, so I thought I’d try it out too. Let’s see how I did:

Not too bad right? Ikat seems to be one of those designs that lends itself really well to slightly messy technique, which really works out for me! Here’s another pic:

And one last pic where I adjusted the color a bit to show how the peach looks in different lighting:

Colors used:

  • Base: China Glaze Sun of a Peach (such a gorgeous neon peach)
  • Ikat: Zoya Purity (white), China Glaze Highlight of my Summer (neon mint), and Zoya Raven (black)

I really like this color combination and am overall pretty pleased with how this came out! I think if I do ikat again, I’ll make the triangular shapes more narrow and maybe use a smaller brush to make the black detailing look more “brushy.”

Have you done ikat nails before? What color combos do you like? Are you as obsessed with neons as I am right now?!

June NCC #2: Orange is the New Black

The Nail Challenge Collaborative theme for June is Black & White. This coincided well with the release of season 2 of Orange is the New Black, so of course I have to feature my new bright orange polish from Marc Jacobs!

1-IMG_0302

If you haven’t seen the show, you should! It’s amazing. This mani is obviously inspired by title, for one. The main character’s nickname from her first prison wife is Dandelion, so I stamped on a dandelion to pay tribute to Crazy Eyes.

And another pic:

Index finger & thumb:

  • Zoya Carey (light grey creme) with
  • Formula X Firecracker (matte orange glitter topper) and
  • Different Dimension’s Social Suicide (an amazing matte white and black hex glitter… no bar glitter! It took me forever to find a glitter topper with B&W and no bar glitter)

Middle & Ring finger: Marc Jacobs Oh Splat! (gorgeous bright orange creme) with MoYou Pro 06 stamping using Konad white stamping polish

Pinky: MJ Oh Splat! with Zoya Purity splattered over it

Spring Flower Mani

I wanted to share an older manicure I did about a month ago. Please forgive the poor photography – I’m still improving!

I was inspired by the beautiful flowers that Paulina’s Passions is famous for. She did a gorgeous mani called her Nautical Rose Mani, where she had horizontal navy blue and white stripes and pink roses as accents. I had to try it!

The CLAW! (Does anyone else think about Toy Story whenever they do the claw pose? I know I do 🙂 )

Image

I decided to do vertical stripes instead because my nails were a bit shorter and I didn’t want them to look wide and stubby. I think the vertical stripes elongate them a bit.

Image

Here’s how I did it:

  • Base color of L’Oreal Jet Set to Paris, a much older polish of mine that is a really pretty darker blue creme
  • Stripes with Zoya Purity
  • Then I blobbed on slightly irregular dots of Essie Boom Boom Room (the light Barbie pink)
  • Then I used a small striper to draw little swirly lines of a darker pink, L’Oreal Check Me Out (a more fuschia pink)
  • Then I drew on small leaves with a small dotting tool using Revlon Posh (a crayola true green)

Image

I really loved this manicure! Wish my pics were better, but hey I’m working on that! What do you think of my first attempt at roses over stripes?

Green Graffiti Nails

I saw this amazing idea awhile ago and couldn’t wait to copy it. Chit Chat Nails did a twin blog post and used one of the Bundle Monster image plates from the Create Your Own set. http://www.chitchatnails.com/2013/10/18/twin-post-with-nail-call-part-2/

Gorgeous, right? Instead of the grey gradient, I used bright green. But otherwise, mine is practically identical… and I love it!

I absolutely love this! I think it’s one of my best manicures, don’t you?!
