Doctor Who Manicure: November NCC #3

So technically this manicure for November’s NCC (inspired by a book) is a bit of a cheat. Doctor Who is a television show, not a book. I do, however, have a book on Doctor Who (Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who)! So I’m calling it a draw. 🙂

I’ve been meaning to do a Doctor Who themed manicure for awhile now, and I’m so happy I finally did! I’ve become a bit obsessed with the show – if you’ve seen it, you understand. I was introduced to this amazing show just about a year and a half ago, and I adore it! It’s nerdy, hilarious, and loaded with so many feels. In one episode, you can go from giggling to terrified to sobbing in the corner in the fetal position. I’ve only seen “New Who,” aka the seasons from 2005 to present and Netflix only has sporadic pieces of Original Who, so when I saw this book guide to the 50 years of the show I had to have it!

The Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who

The book does exist! The Essential Guide to 50 Years of Doctor Who – Just look at all those villains!

And here is my Doctor Who manicure:

I love this mani so much! From the Tardis decal to the Dalek to that gorgeous blue polish… it all just makes me happy! If you’re not familiar with the show, let me briefly explain what each finger means.

  • My index finger has a Tardis decal – the Tardis is the spaceship that can transport the Doctor and his companion(s) through space and time (it stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space).
  • My middle finger is the color of the Tardis and the polish is named after one of the Doctor’s companions, Amy Pond (one of my top 3 favorites).
  • My ring finger is a Dalek (an enemy of the Doctor’s).
  • And my pinky is based on another villain from the show, The Silence.
  • Oh! And the grey base polish is named after another villain, the Vashta Nerada.

What I used:

  • Index: Grey base = Digital Nails Count Your Shadows… These pics don’t do the polish justice. There’s a slight pink/ purple shimmer that isn’t showing up well. You can kind of see it on my pinky. Digital Nails has an amazing variety of Doctor Who-themed polishes. That makes me so happy – I need so many of them!!
  • Index: Decal is from YouPolish – the sheet also has Daleks, three different Doctors’ faces (9, 10, and 11), and DW
  • Middle finger: Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer A Long Time Ago Tomorrow… this is an amazingly beautiful shimmery Tardis-blue from the Women of Doctor Who collection. It dries a bit satin, but a top coat makes it soooo pretty! Love love love!!
  • Ring finger: Base color Sally Hansen Black Platinum… a semi-sheer black with a tinge of silver shimmer. Stripes are Revlon’s Sequin, a silver chrome. Nail studs were a gift off Amazon, I believe.
  • Pinky: Base is Digital Nails Count Your Shadows with Zoya Raven details.

So what do you think? Does this sort of count as a book-themed mani? Are you a fellow Whovian? If so, who’s your favorite companion and favorite Doctor?

CrowsToes VooDoo: a perfect Halloween glitter

Happy Friday! Are you into the Halloween spirit yet? I’m slowly getting there. Today I figured I’d show a brand new polish of mine that is PERFECT for the upcoming holiday! CrowsToes nail polish was recently restocked, and I’ve been coveting so many of their beauties. And Dani of From Polish, With Love (my new blogger girl crush!) convinced me I needed to bite the bullet and BUY ALL THE CROWSTOES! So I did 🙂 So anyways, here’s one of my first CrowsToes, VooDoo!

VooDoo over black, blue, and purple

CrowsToes VooDoo over black, blue, and purple undies

First I wanted to see what the perfect undies were, so I tried black (Zoya Raven) on my pinky & index fingers, dark blue (Zoya Ryan) on my middle finger, and purple (OPI Do You Have This Color In Stockholm?) on my ring finger.

A new hand position - yay or nay?

A new hand position – yay or nay?

VooDoo is a gooorgeous glitter topper that has varied sizes of orange, purple, and teal glitter in hexes and shards. Oh, and there’s also some orange bar glitter. I usually despise bar glitter, but it actually looks pretty good in this polish!

So my favorite combo with this topper was actually Zoya Ryan, the beautiful deep navy blue. I thought it was going to be black or purple, but blue definitely won out!

And a closeup:

Just look at that glitter!

Just look at that glitter!

All of these swatches just had one coat of VooDoo – there’s amazing glitter payoff! I did some dabbing to even out the application, but it was super easy to get a great look!

So what do you think? Are you pro- or anti-bar glitter? And how do you like my new hand positioning? I’m kind of liking it, but it is awkward in the picture-taking. Also, do you have any CrowsToes favorites? Any must-haves?

Neon Ikat Manicure

If you haven’t realized from my last few posts, I’m really into neon nails right now! I love a good, bright manicure that glows in the sun. A bunch of my admired nail bloggers from the Oh Mon Dieu challenge recently did ikat manicures, so I thought I’d try it out too. Let’s see how I did:

Not too bad right? Ikat seems to be one of those designs that lends itself really well to slightly messy technique, which really works out for me! Here’s another pic:

And one last pic where I adjusted the color a bit to show how the peach looks in different lighting:

Colors used:

  • Base: China Glaze Sun of a Peach (such a gorgeous neon peach)
  • Ikat: Zoya Purity (white), China Glaze Highlight of my Summer (neon mint), and Zoya Raven (black)

I really like this color combination and am overall pretty pleased with how this came out! I think if I do ikat again, I’ll make the triangular shapes more narrow and maybe use a smaller brush to make the black detailing look more “brushy.”

Have you done ikat nails before? What color combos do you like? Are you as obsessed with neons as I am right now?!

B&W Scaled Gradient: June NCC #4

Last Nail Challenge Collaborative post for the month! I’ve actually had a difficult time thinking of different, creative manis this month. But I think I have a good one here.

I saw a beautiful scaled gradient from Simply Nailogical in neon shades and really wanted to try it out. So this is my first attempt at a scaled gradient in black and white to fit our June theme!

Definitely didn’t come out perfect, but I like it.

I used a base of OPI Alpine snow, then did my first gradient of Alpine Snow, Zoya Carey (grey creme), and Zoya Raven (black creme with slight shimmer) at the base of each nail.

Once the first gradient was done, I put a single chevron vinyl from Nail Vinyls over the black mid nail. The difficult part was covering up the bottom of the sticker while keeping the chevron detail intact. Then I sponged on another gradient at the tips of my nails. On most nails, I had to go back and touch up the black to show the detail of the chevron. But I think it looks alright!

Here are a few more pics:

And a bit closer:

I’m definitely going to have to try this design again in different colors. I think it might also be easier if the darker color of the gradient was at the base of the nail.

Thus endeth June’s Nail Challenge Collaborative! July’s challenge will be recreations of old manicures.
